History

Menzies Printers was founded by Mr.
and Mrs. Art Menzies and their son Mal as a weekly newspaper and
commercial printing plant in Sexsmith, Alberta. Prior to this, Art had
been involved in weekly newspapers in Saskatchewan and as a freelance
journalist in Western Canada for many years.
In 1950, the family was joined by Ann Lozeron who married Mal and became actively engaged in the business. The business was relocated to the larger nearby centre of Grande Prairie, Alberta.Following the retirement of Mr. and Mrs. Art Menzies in 1968, the firm expanded into stationery and furniture. At one time or another, each of Mal and Anns seven children were employed in the family business. |
Son Grant and wife Jamie became
permanently involved in 1979. In November 1988, Mal and Ann Menzies
retired with Grant and Jamie taking over the company. In November 1997,
Grant and Jamie sold the office products division of the business to the
largest distributor of office related supplies and services in the
world, Corporate Express. This brought the third generation family
business back to its roots, with employees dedicated to manufacturing
quality print products for their customers every day.
Menzies Printers is now growing exclusively as a leader in the Printing
and Graphics industry. Growth through acquisition began in April 2000,
when Menzies purchased a local Grande Prairie competitor. In August
2000, they expanded into the Interior of British Columbia with the
purchase of Thompson Valley Printing in Kamloops. In June 2001 the
acquisition of Lightwaves Press in Edmonton was completed. The move into
the large Alberta Capital region positioned the company for further
growth while aligning itself closer to its supplier base. In July 2003
Menzies acquired another long time Edmonton firm, Graphic Consulting and
Services. The added staff, expertise, and equipment allowed for further
in house production and expansion. January 2005 saw another acquisition
in Kamloops, that of Commercial Colour Press, and in April 2005, Elite
Printing was merged into the Edmonton plant. November 2006 saw the addition of DF Print Solutions and October 2008, Goldstar Business Forms both in Calgary, rounding out the distribution points in Western Canada. The addition of DF Print Solutions will add new capabilities
and much needed capacity to the Menzies Group.
With a talented, dedicated staff, Menzies Printers looks forward to the challenges of forming The Menzies Group of printing companies into a competitive force in each market they serve. Menzies ongoing commitment to exceptional customer service at competitive pricing has been the cornerstone of growth for over 63 years, and will be the driving force well into the fourth generation!
